Shout Factory to Release UltraHD Blu-ray of Weird Al’s UHF
Believe it or not, it has been 35 years since Weird Al’s iconic UHF was first released. In honor of this anniversary, Shout Factory is set to release an UltraHD Blu-ray version of the movie for the first time ever, available in 4K resolution.
This highly anticipated disc is scheduled to be released on July 2nd, with pre-orders currently open. It will feature a new 4K scan of the original 35mm negative, as well as audio commentary from Weird Al himself and Jay Levy, the film’s director.
Special Features and Collectibles
In addition to the upgraded 4K version, the disc will also include a standard HD Blu-ray with various special features. These features consist of a video from a 2014 Comic-Con panel discussing the movie, deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and other exclusive content.
For fans looking for the ultimate UHF experience, deluxe editions will be available containing physical collectibles. These include an 18×24 inch poster featuring the original theatrical artwork, a new poster designed specifically for this release, 10 scratch-and-sniff stickers with a guide for use, vintage vending machine prism stickers, and a Spatula City fridge magnet. Additionally, a 6-inch UHF Remote Control Stress Relief Collectible will be included, limited to just 1,000 units.
For a more exclusive offering, the collector’s edition will contain five UHF-themed hard enamel pins and will be limited to just 500 units.
Pricing and Availability
The UHF UltraHD Blu-ray set will be available in four different tiers, priced at $40, $53, $76, and $130. If you are solely interested in the movie itself and not the physical collectibles, the base price of $40 is what you need to know.
Originally released in 1989, UHF marked Weird Al’s debut as a leading actor and writer. Despite being a box office disappointment, the film developed a dedicated following on VHS throughout the 1990s.
While UHF remains a cult favorite, it has yet to achieve mainstream recognition. The limited-run release of this new UltraHD Blu-ray suggests that the film’s fan base prefers its niche status.
