Worldcoin Foundation Open-Sources Core Components of Orb Technology

Worldcoin Foundation, the organization responsible for the development of the digital asset protocol by OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, announced on Friday that it is opening up the “core components” of its Orb technology. This move is aimed at promoting trust and collaborative development, as Worldcoin invites anyone to examine the code for its Orb eye scanners.

“Open-sourcing typically helps to foster trust, transparency, and verifiability while also encouraging developer communities to further advance a technology,” a Worldcoin spokesperson informed Decrypt. “This builds on the open-sourcing of the iris code last late last year and opening up of the hardware nearly a year ago.”

Worldcoin, a separate crypto project from OpenAI, was launched by Altman and Alex Blania in January 2023 under the name Tools for Humanity. The platform aims to establish a global identification standard to verify “personhood” and combat bots. In July, Worldcoin introduced its WLD token on the Optimism mainnet.

The Orb technology developed by Worldcoin scans the irises of users to create a unique “fingerprint” known as the IrisCode, which is then stored on Worldcoin’s blockchain and used to link to a WorldID for the user.

Despite its innovative approach, Worldcoin has faced some controversy surrounding its eye-scanning technology. The platform offered its WLD token in exchange for allowing users to have their biometric data scanned with the Orb, raising concerns about security vulnerabilities. This was highlighted by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in a post, where he warned about the potential risks associated with malicious actors generating fake iris scan hashes.

Addressing these concerns, Worldcoin emphasized that user privacy is a top priority. “Privacy and security have always been top priorities when building the Orb,” the foundation stated in its announcement. “Further audits are underway and, combined with open sourcing, reflect the Foundation’s aim to maintain a continuously high level of transparency around privacy and security.”

In a separate development, blockchain-based esports platform Community Gaming announced that it would leverage Worldcoin’s WorldID to detect cheaters. It clarified that the Worldcoin Orb technology is not required for the integration of WorldID into its platform.

Following the news about the Orb technology, Worldcoin’s WLD cryptocurrency saw a nearly 4% increase in value, reaching $8.40. This rise comes amidst significant volatility in the broader cryptocurrency market, with fluctuations of up to 10% in the past 24 hours.
