The Worldcoin Foundation has taken a significant step forward in the field of online identity verification by releasing the core software components of its ORB technology into the open-source domain. The Foundation’s commitment to transparency is further underscored by the release of its hardware and iris recognition technology to the public domain. This strategic decision comes in response to concerns raised by several countries regarding the Foundation’s biometric data collection practices.

Comprehensive Compute Stack for ORB Technology
The primary function of the ORB technology is to authenticate users by analyzing their eye and facial images to differentiate between genuine human users and automated systems or artificial intelligence. The recent open-source release focuses on the software responsible for capturing and securely transmitting these images to the World App, emphasizing the Foundation’s dedication to transparent and accountable processes.
The ORB’s computational stack, developed by Tools for Humanity (TFH), leverages the NVIDIA Jetson platform to enable real-time processing of camera feeds for rapid World ID verification. Through the utilization of Rust applications and NVIDIA’s TensorRT engine, the technology prioritizes performance and security in managing sensitive biometric data.

Following concerns raised by global regulators regarding the Foundation’s biometric data collection practices, a security audit of the ORB technology was conducted by Trail of Bits. The audit identified 12 vulnerabilities, including one severe issue, while affirming the technology’s compliance with privacy standards in handling personally identifiable information.
In response, Worldcoin addressed the high-severity issue post-audit and is working towards implementing additional improvements based on the audit’s recommendations. The Foundation’s future endeavors include enhancing the software’s transparency and reducing reliance on proprietary components, with the initial release encompassing critical elements such as orb-core, orb-attest, and orb-firmware.
