Xbox Unveils New Gears of War Game: Gears of War: E-Day

Xbox surprised fans with a special announcement at the end of its summer game showcase: a new Gears of War game set before the main series, titled Gears of War: E-Day. The cinematic trailer showcased young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago battling Locusts on Emergence Day, a pivotal event in the Gears of War universe. While the trailer didn’t reveal many specifics about the game, it featured an instrumental version of the original game’s iconic “Mad World” song, invoking a sense of nostalgia.

Xbox later shared more insights about the game in an Xbox Wire post. According to The Coalition developers, Gears of War: E-Day will maintain the beloved third-person cover-based shooting mechanics of the series while incorporating next-gen technology to introduce new features. Creative director Matt Searcy expressed, “It’s going to feel like a new Gears game, because that’s what it is. It’s going to be awesome, a game that feels both truly new and authentically Gears.”

A Deep Dive into the Prequel Story

The prequel will delve into the events of Emergence Day on Sera, depicting Marcus and Dom’s initial encounters with the Locusts and the formation of their enduring friendship. Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game faithfully recreates the Gears universe in the new engine, including the iconic Lancer. The developers hinted at exploring the origins of the Chainsaw Lancer in E-Day. As of now, the game does not have a confirmed release date.
