Details of the Death of John Barnett

Recently, a clearer picture has emerged regarding the death of John Barnett, a former quality control engineer at Boeing who was deeply enmeshed in a legal battle against the aviation company. Barnett, who had blown the whistle on significant safety violations at Boeing, was found deceased in his truck in a motel parking lot in Charleston, South Carolina earlier this year.

Coroner’s Findings

After the initial speculation surrounding Barnett’s death, the coroner’s office in Charleston has released its final assessment. The report states that Barnett’s demise was the result of a gunshot wound to the head and classifies the manner of death as suicide. Despite the swirling conspiracy theories linking Boeing to Barnett’s death, the coroner’s report appears to confirm a tragic end to Barnett’s life.

Surveillance Footage Details

The coroner’s report provides intriguing insights into the hours leading up to Barnett’s death. Footage from surveillance cameras at the motel revealed that Barnett was the sole individual near his vehicle during the critical period. The absence of any other persons interacting with Barnett adds to the mystery surrounding his passing.

A thorough review of the footage revealed Mr. Barnett entered the hotel lobby on March 8, 2024, at 1926 hours. He exited the hotel at 2037 hours. At 2045 hours, his truck was observed backing into the parking space where it was later discovered. Video surveillance recordings continuously record his vehicle. Throughout the review of surveillance video spanning the evening of March 8th through the morning of March 9th, from the time the vehicle was backed into the parking space until the Charleston Fire Department gained entry to the vehicle, no other individuals were seen entering or exiting Mr. Barnett’s vehicle. At no time did anyone engage or try to make contact with Mr. Barnett. The vehicle brake lights were captured blinking on and off at 0720 hours on March 9, 2024.

Discovery of a Suicide Note

Furthermore, inside Barnett’s truck, investigators found a notebook containing writings that resembled a suicide note. The contents of this note, which bore only Barnett’s fingerprints, contained information known solely to his family. This revelation further solidifies the narrative of suicide as the cause of Barnett’s demise.

The writings found in the vehicle were examined by the Charleston Police Department and found only Mr. Barnett’s fingerprints on the notebook. The writings contained information known only to his family.

Coroner’s Assessment

The conclusion drawn by the coroner’s report points towards mental health struggles and stress related to the ongoing lawsuit as significant factors leading to Barnett’s tragic decision. Chronic stress, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, compounded by the loss of his wife, all contributed to Barnett’s deteriorating mental state.

“A review of medical records and interviews with Mr. Barnett’s family, attorneys, and healthcare professionals, revealed Mr. Barnett was under chronic stress in the context of the lawsuit, suffered from anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and grieved the death of his wife.”

In light of these findings, Barnett’s family has publicly stated that his death was a result of the hostile work environment at Boeing, which exacerbated his existing mental health challenges.
