As the world grapples with the urgent need to combat climate change, governments and regulators are now recognizing that investment in modern technology systems is a vital component of the global fight against harmful emissions. Traditional approaches that have governed sustainability measures, commitments, and pledges in the past have been found lacking in transparency, efficiency, verifiability, and, critically, trust.

The Need for Modern Solutions

An illustrative example of the limitations of these traditional approaches can be seen in the Canadian government’s recent environmental tax agenda imposed on major oil companies. While the policy aimed to curb ecological impacts by raising market prices, its practical implications extended far beyond the targeted oil companies. The tax, which applies to any use of oil and gas, has significant repercussions for farmers who rely on these resources for fueling tractors, heating barns, and transporting produce. Consequently, food prices have skyrocketed, placing a disproportionate burden on consumers struggling to meet their basic needs.

While these pledges symbolize a commitment to address climate change, the crucial next step is to translate them into concrete action and provide incentives for eco-friendly practices.

Modern measuring processes enabled by blockchain technology offer the added benefit of providing near real-time progress reports on climate pledges, thereby encouraging and rewarding sustainable practices at a community level.

Bringing Everyone Together for More Effective Regulation

Deforestation contributes to approximately 11% of global carbon emissions, a concerning statistic that took center stage at COP28. The year 2024 marks a potential turning point in this arena, as the EU’s new anti-deforestation law, EUDR, comes into effect. This law mandates proof that goods like coffee, soya, and cocoa imported into the EU have not been produced on land affected by deforestation.

While environmental activists applaud this regulatory development, questions arise regarding how farmers in the Global South can comply with the EUDR without substantial support. For example, over 70% of the world’s cocoa beans are produced in West African countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon, with much of the production processed and distributed in Europe. The EU regulations now require farmers to prove that their produce is deforestation-free, presenting a significant challenge given the limited monitoring capabilities of smaller farms in the Global South.

Aerial photography and artificial intelligence enable farmers to accurately identify crops grown in areas impacted by deforestation. Advanced machine learning facilitates seamless monitoring of farm activities, providing farmers with actionable insights derived from real-time data.

Integrating blockchain into these technological advancements establishes a transparent, secure, and immutable record of a product’s journey. This blockchain-based traceability enhances supply chain processes, enabling farmers to comply with regulations like the EUDR. Moreover, the accessibility of these technologies through user-friendly mobile applications extends their benefits to farmers who may have had minimal exposure to agricultural technology in the past.

This convergence of innovative technological solutions empowers farmers to access markets, optimize crop yields, and minimize environmental footprints. By embracing these opportunities, smallholder farmers can adopt more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
