Experiencing the Total Solar Eclipse in Rochester, NY

Living in the U.K., opportunities to witness a total solar eclipse have been scarce for me. The only one within my lifetime occurred in 1999, but I was outside the path of totality, hindered by clouds and missed out on a fulfilling viewing experience.

This time, I have made the decision to travel to Rochester, NY, to immerse myself in the state’s first total solar eclipse in 99 years at the ROC the Eclipse Festival. Situated within the path of totality, a 115-mile-wide route through North America where the moon will completely obscure the sun, Rochester is the perfect location to observe the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8.

Anticipated Visitors and Excitement

Hundreds of thousands of people, including myself, will be converging on the vibrant city of Rochester in hopes of witnessing a truly extraordinary event. Rachel Laber Pulvino, Director of Market Communications and Public Relations at Visit Rochester, shared that a significant number of visitors, ranging from 300k to 500k, are expected across the Greater Rochester region.

Rochester stands out as one of the largest U.S. cities within the path of totality, offering 3 minutes and 39 seconds of daytime darkness starting at 3:20 p.m. EDT. To build up excitement leading to the eclipse, Rochester will host over two dozen events during the “eclipse weekend” with various activities, speakers, music, and food to engage and delight attendees.

Entertainment Offerings during the Eclipse Weekend

Some of the entertainment options available include:

  • Planetarium shows
  • Live stage entertainment featuring prominent figures like “Bad Astronomer” Dr. Phil Plait and former NASA astronaut Lee M. Morin
  • Electricity theater performances with singing tesla coils
  • Solar viewing opportunities through telescopes
  • Post-eclipse concert with country artist Dylan Marlowe

Preparations for the Rochester eclipse have been ongoing since the last total solar eclipse in 2017, involving numerous community organizations, venues, attractions, restaurants, and hotels in planning for this significant event.

Ensuring Safety and Public Awareness

Given the anticipated influx of visitors, safety remains a top priority for the organizers. Close collaboration with local law enforcement, emergency management offices, and the New York State Department of Transportation has been crucial in planning for a smooth and secure experience for all participants.

Public safety officials, in conjunction with Monroe County, have initiated a public awareness campaign titled “Be Aware. Be Prepared. Be There” to raise local awareness and encourage residents to adjust their schedules to manage traffic flow efficiently on the day of the eclipse.

As I prepare to witness my first total solar eclipse, I invite you to follow my journey on Space.com’s social media platforms, including TikTok. Stay tuned for updates on my eclipse experience, weather permitting!

If you are unable to attend the eclipse in person, you can watch the event live on Space.com. Follow our live updates blog for all the latest action surrounding the total solar eclipse in 2024.

My travel to Rochester for this remarkable event has been made possible by Visit Rochester, and I am eager to share this unforgettable experience with the world.
