Concerns Among Democrats Regarding President Biden’s State of the Union Address

There exists a level of uncertainty among some Democratic representatives regarding President Joe Biden’s upcoming State of the Union address scheduled for Thursday. An unnamed Democratic House member conveyed apprehensions about the event while speaking to Axios, stating, “We are all nervous” in anticipation of the speech. The individual in question also expressed doubts about President Biden’s “ability to speak without blowing things.”

Another anonymous Democrat echoed similar sentiments, fearing embarrassing verbal mistakes during the speech and attempting to draw a comparison to former President Donald Trump’s speaking style. This individual acknowledged Trump’s historical rhetorical slips while asserting, “Biden is going to make rhetoric slips. I think the key is his energy level.”

The concerns expressed by these Democrats are not unfounded, considering President Biden’s occasional struggles with public speaking dating back to his presidential candidacy announcement in 2019. Throughout various public appearances, Biden has faced instances of forgetting important details and experiencing mental lapses, leading to notable gaffes during his 2023 speech. Notably, he mistakenly referred to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as the minority leader and appeared to forget the name of the Ukrainian ambassador to the United States in attendance.

President Biden, ahead of his upcoming address, released a promotional video featuring interactions with Hollywood actors known for portraying historical presidents, highlighting the significance of the impending speech. The video aimed to generate anticipation and interest in the forthcoming State of the Union event.

It is important to note that President Biden will deliver his 2024 State of the Union address at the age of 81, making him the oldest individual to hold the office of American president in history.
