The U.S. Space Force has recently conducted tests on a groundbreaking ground-based satellite jamming weapon designed to enhance the safety of American military personnel against potential threats originating from space. The tests were carried out by the Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM), an entity responsible for educating and training U.S. Space Force personnel. The weapon in question is known as the Remote Modular Terminal (RMT), which is classified as a jammer created to deny, degrade, or disrupt communications with satellites by flooding specific portions of the electromagnetic spectrum with interference.

Gerrit Dalman highlighted that the RMT could be utilized from virtually anywhere to obstruct adversaries’ access to orbiting satellites.

During the tests, two RMT units were set up at distinct locations and controlled by a third unit. The evaluation encompassed important metrics such as system latency, target engagement accuracy, and the security of its communications. The RMT was conceived and developed by the Space Rapid Capabilities Office, a distinctive entity dedicated to swiftly delivering pioneering operational space capabilities to the U.S. military. According to a slide deck presented by the Space Rapid Capabilities Office to industry stakeholders in October 2023, these jammers are portable systems capable of deployment in various environments—even in the absence of existing infrastructure.
Ultimately, the deployment and operation of the RMT in combat scenarios could potentially neutralize or disrupt communication links to adversary satellites surveilling or targeting U.S. forces on the ground, reflecting a proactive approach to safeguarding national security in the space domain.
