An analysis conducted by SplitMetrics, a company specializing in app growth solutions, has revealed that AI girlfriends are significantly more popular than AI boyfriends. The research delved into 38 AI chat apps that offer virtual companionship and dating, available on the Google Play Store.

The study found that the AI Girlfriend app has been downloaded nearly seven times more than the AI Boyfriend app. With 506,000 downloads for AI Girlfriend compared to 74,000 downloads for AI Boyfriend, it suggests that there is a greater demand for female AI companionship over male counterparts.

The surge in popularity of AI companionship is evident, with AI companion apps collectively amassing 225 million lifetime downloads on the Google Play Store.

Impact of ChatGPT on the virtual companionship and dating sector

Following the launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI in November 2022, the virtual companionship and dating sector experienced a 49% growth in downloads, attracting 74 million new users. Leading the market is the South Korean app SimSimi, which commands over half of all downloads in the sector.

Seven apps with an estimated 10 million downloads have an undisclosed country origin.

When analyzing the European market, the United Kingdom emerges as the front-runner with five U.K.-based app developers, trailed by Spain with three developers, and Poland and Turkey with two developers each.

Notably, European developers lead the market share with 43% in Android app downloads post the ChatGPT launch, while American developers hold 22%. In terms of lifetime downloads, Asia dominates with 64%, followed by Europe with 15% and America with 14%.

Industry Insights and Future Outlook

Thomas Kriebernegg, the general manager of SplitMetrics Agency, remarked on the impact of generative AI on app development, particularly in the realm of AI dating and companionship. He highlighted the rapid evolution and rising popularity of AI companionship apps, attributing it in part to the launch of ChatGPT.

“Whether growth in this sector will continue at this pace remains to be seen, but nearly a quarter of a billion users is a very significant milestone, indicating that it’s more than just a passing trend. I anticipate more developers will take notice of this trend and seek ways to further innovate and monetize within this category,”
